One should carry out detoxification of the kidneys at least once a year. We show you exactly how to go about it.

When we start a diet, weight loss is usually the goal. However, there are diets that are adapted to other purposes, for example, to carry out detoxification of the kidneys.

The kidneys are important organs for a healthy body. These organs are shaped like beans and their size speaks nothing of their enormous responsibilities. They are only around eight centimeters wide and thirteen centimeters long, about the size of a fist.

They sit just above the waist and behind the abdominal cavity. The main task of the kidneys is to cleanse the body of toxins. They separate the body’s good and bad substances and ensure that the bad ones are eliminated.

Considering how important the kidneys are, we would like to recommend a wonderful detox diet in this article so that you can detoxify the kidneys and maintain their health.

Kidney function

The kidneys are the body’s main blood filter. These organs retain what the body can use and eliminate the rest through the urine. In addition to filtering the blood, the kidneys also have other tasks that highlight just how important it is to keep them in good shape. Its details are described by the online medical journal  Zona Hospitalaria  (article in Spanish):

  • Filters 1.8 liters of liquid every day.
  • Generates between 1.5 and 2 liters of urine.
  • Eliminates toxins.
  • Reabsorbs good substances such as water, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and glucose.
  • Essential for synthesizing the hormone erythropoietin which is responsible for the production of red blood cells.
  • Plays an important role in the synthesis of renin, a hormone involved in blood pressure regulation.
  • Are involved in the production of vitamin D which keeps bone health good by producing calcitriol.
  • Helps our body maintain homeostasis.

Now it is best to take a look at the signs that may indicate that you have kidney problems, in order to decide if you should start a kidney detoxification diet.

  • Fluid retention
  • Changes in the smell, color, or amount of urine
  • Pain when urinating
  • Possible urinary tract infections
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Possible kidney infections
  • General fatigue
  • Itchy rash on the skin

Detoxification of the kidneys with the diet

One should carry out detoxification of the kidneys at least once a year. The first thing you should know is which foods to avoid because they can affect kidney function.

One should avoid eating large amounts of salt and avoid foods that leave behind toxic residues, such as coffee, lentils, walnuts, and plums. Also, stay away from foods rich in purines as they raise the levels of uric acid in the body. We list examples of these below:

  • Sardines
  • Anchovy
  • Sausage
  • Legumes

Likewise, one can be careful with foods that have a high content of potassium because they can be problematic for people with kidney problems or weak kidneys in general. If this is the case for you, you should avoid spinach, sweet potatoes, oranges, cabbage, and potatoes.

Say no to large portions because some foods and certain foods require the kidneys to work harder. They can be harmful, especially if they are animal products. You don’t have to completely eliminate these from your diet, but we recommend eating them in moderate portions. Keep track of your intake of:

  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Lactose-containing products
  • Egg

Reduce sugar intake

We want to discuss sugar separately because it is a food that should very rarely be part of one’s diet. You have probably heard that before from parents, grandparents, and doctors.

Eating too much sugar not only leads to diabetes and high cholesterol but also too unpleasant kidney problems. The kidneys are weakened by a diet that is too high in sugar and saturated fat.

What to eat to cleanse the kidneys?

Detoxification of the kidneys should only last for a few days. Diuretic foods play an important role in this diet as they help the body eliminate toxins. Examples of foods you can try are broccoli, artichokes, pineapple, onions, and watercress.

While eating these foods, you can also drink diuretic drinks. The best options are drinks containing parsley, anise, dandelion, and horseradish. All you have to do is boil some water and add the ingredients you feel like. Drink this decoction for a maximum of one week.

If you prepare a mixture with a liter of water and horseradish, you can store the drink in the refrigerator and drink it for up to 15 days. These decoctions along with a diet of diuretic foods are an excellent combination for cleansing the kidneys.

drink a lot of water

Drink two or three liters of water daily. Water helps our kidneys by allowing them to work smoothly without too much effort. If you consume protein, you can increase the amount of daily water intake by one or two glasses.

The only exception is people who have problems urinating or who suffer from swelling or fluid retention. If this is the case for you, or when you decide to do a kidney detox overall, you should talk to your doctor about your plans and your diet.
